Our Nature Is Creative is an immersive sculptural installation based in connections. Born of Limric’s belief in the creative nature of the universe, the sculpture brings together three scales of life through the cosmic orbital structure, the earthen materials, and human interaction. Viewers were invited to walk through the sculpture and observe the intricate network of over 150 clay pendants woven through the branches. The pendants are bodily abstractions, their connective web reminiscent of stellar constellations. The three interlocking rings were made with foraged branches from Lucas Gardens where they were later returned.
“My goal with this project was to convey to people that creativity is in their nature, as part of the creative universe and a life-giving planet. I wanted people to see themselves in the stars, both as their place of origin, and in the way our human connections function as living constellations.”
Our Nature Is Creative was Limric’s first site-specific work and temporary installation.
“The disassembly felt just as important as the making. It was a gratifying experience, and for me it completed the work. The sculpture felt like it was meant to be temporary, and therefore infinite. It was important to do the entire thing myself, and I enjoyed undoing the work as a way of saying goodbye. I was also grateful not having to watch my own work deteriorate, and glad that the materials I used will have another life in the garden, as homes for insects, eventually rejoining the soil.
I let intuition inform every decision, from the materials I chose, to the methods of making, to the design of the sculpture. Nothing felt forced. As it came to life, I felt like the artwork was teaching me. In past sculptures I’ve had to work against the material, but this entire process felt like I was helping the work grow to become something it already wanted to be.”
