I would leave everything behind
Everyone we know
Everything that’s mine
I’d follow you into the darkness
Because where you are, the stars always shine
And we’d grow flowers and live in a garden
We’ve done it before, what’s one more time?
I made this sculpture to accompany a short poem I wrote last winter about my best friend. Although I am by no means a composer, I felt that what I’d written was not really a poem, but a melody. More specifically, a waltz, intended to loop so that like the friendship that inspired it, the music is infinite.
Now the sculpture hangs on my bedroom wall, but when I presented the project to my classmates, I played a looped recording of the song and had them lay underneath the sculpture as it hung suspended from the ceiling. Everyone was given handheld lights to shine on the revolving sculpture as they listened to the music.
This is the first time music has found its way into my artistic practice, and I was surprised by how strongly I felt the need to try this new medium, much less share the results with other people. So although the song is simple, the piano playing rudimentary, and despite me accidentally messing up at that one part in the recording… my hope is that together the music and artwork allow people to experience the comfort and hope of something infinite.
This interactive sculpture and audio installation, inspired by an original song, lets viewers experience the comfort and hope of infinity by listening to the song played on a loop while laying beneath the revolving sculpture, illuminated by their handheld lights.
